Yes, our MOO™ products have gone through a strict review by NOFA (a leading organic products organization) and have been approved for commercial and home organic use.
What is the pH level of MOO DOO®?
Our MOO™ products have a neutral pH level. The numbers will vary a little bit, but are close to a pH of 7.
Can I plant directly into MOO DOO®?
MOO DOO® works best when it’s incorporated into a product such as MOO DIRT® or a topsoil. MOO DOO® is rich in nitrogen, and that nitrogen may burn tender seedlings. For best direct planting of seedlings, we recommend MOO MIX® or MOO GROW®.
Can I use MOO DOO® as a topdressing on my garden?
Absolutely! MOO DOO® works great as a topdressing for perennials, vegetables, and flower beds. Its slow-release nitrogen is ideal for feeding plants during the growing season.
What should I use around my trees and shrubs?
We have an awesome product called MOO PLANT®. It has a nice texture and look to it, and it’s great for adding nutrients to the soil. Many people prefer a darker mulch around their trees and shrubs, and MOO PLANT® fits the bill! The Foster Brothers line has a product specifically formulated for Shrubs and Trees, and it’s also very effective.
MOO START® is a nice product for starting seeds. It has a delicate texture and its composition of it retains water, reducing your watering time.
I’m planting perennials. My soil is very clayish — how should I prepare it?
Compost! Compost is such a great thing to use when you are prepping soil. It adds organic matter to the clay, making it easier to work with, and also makes the clay drain easily. Dig up the spot you intend to plant into, and remove the existing soil. In a wheelbarrow or a large pot, mix MOO DOO® with your existing soil and fill the hole. Then plant your perennials, knowing they will be well fed and will have drainage!
Sandy soil also needs compost. Added compost will help to retain water as well as feed nutrients to your plants. MOO DOO® will achieve both of these goals while providing you with healthy natural soil to plant your garden.
MOO™ products do have an earthy smell — not a strong manure smell, but rather as nature intended soil to smell. Many of our customers who have chemical sensitivities comment that they can enjoy gardening again because of the lack of toxic odor connected with many inorganic gardening products. And, MOO™ products are safe for your pets!
Can we buy bagged products directly from Vermont Natural Ag Products?
Unfortunately, no. As small business owners, we support the specialty Garden Centers and Nurseries that sell MOO™ products. Because of this, we intentionally do not sell to Big Box Stores. If you cannot find MOO™ at your local garden center, give us a call and we can help you locate another nearby retailer. And, if you are too far from us, there are several online distributors who can help you to purchase and ship bagged products. We want you to try and ultimately love our products, so we will work hard to find you a sales source!
If I don’t use up all of the product I bought this year, can I still use it next year?
Sure! Any of our products, if stored in a dry area, can be reused the following year. Remember, though, that some products when applied in the fall will actually benefit your garden in the spring! Nitrogen is released slowly over time and your garden will fertilize itself while it’s covered in snow — so spread on!
To an extent, it does. This isn’t a problem if you are using it in a raised bed garden or a more traditional form of garden. It can, however, present a challenge if you are container gardening. We recommend the use of a “catch pan” under the containers to keep any stray fluids off your deck!
Wow, that’s a good one! This depends on the quality of your existing soil and what you are planting. A good idea is to have your soil tested first so you can determine what is needed in that soil in order to achieve optimum results.
If you are starting a raised bed garden and looking to fill it with MOO™ products, first find your square footage by multiplying the width by the length of your garden and then by the depth. Take this number and divide it by 27 and you will get the amount of yardage you will need to fill your garden.
A bag of MOO™ products has roughly 1.2 cubic feet in it, and there are 27 cubic feet in a yard.
